Yate
Although she has stated in interviews that she was born in the village of
Chipping Sodbury,
Rowling's birth record records her birth at
Yate General Hospital on 31 July 1965. Rowling and her
family lived in this village to the east of
Bristol until the late 1960s (sometime
between her sister Dianne's birth in 1968
and 1970). The name of the village derives from the Saxon "giete"
or "gete," which means a gateway into the forest area. At that
time, southern
Gloucestershire
was covered by woodlands and forest areas. It had evolved into a pastoral
agricultural area by the middle of the 19th century. The Yate coal mines (at
their height from 1830-1890) serviced
Bristol's industrial development.
